Open star cluster M37

UA 16-inch image of Messier 37

The bright open star cluster Messier 37 in Auriga, shown in an R-band CCD image obtained with the UA 16-inch telescope. The field of view shown encompasses the full 20x30 arcminutes that the SBIG camera delivers on our telescope. M37 is the southernmost of the three Messier clusters in Auriga; I always have to take a quick look to remember which one is which. I find this one visually richer than its two companions. Below is a later BVR color vimage of the cluster, picking out the red giant members.
