The open star cluster Messier 34 in Perseus, shown in an R-band CCD image obtained with the UA 16-inch telescope. The field of view shown is the entire 20x30-arcminute field of the CCD. Even so, it misses some outlying bright members. This is a rich neighborhood for observers; the bright, edge-on spiral galaxy appears only 3 degrees to the west.
