Lab Exercise 7 An Incident On the Sun
The Sunny July of 2002
Read Laboratory Exercise 7 section 7.4b and answer questions
26-29.
Study the following satellite image of
the Earth's Auroral Oval. When a CME has arrived on Earth, a geomagnetic
storm gets triggered and the auroral oval will be largest. Use this information
to find out how long it took for the CME to travel towards the Earth from
the sun.
Figure 23. The plots on this page show the extent and position
of the auroral oval at the Northern Hemisphere, extrapolated from measurements
taken during the most recent polar pass of the NOAA POES satellite.
