The Sun

See this amazing time-lapse movie of the solar corona. It was taken in December 1996 from the SOHO spacecraft, on station between Earth and Sun (at the inner Lagrange point L1). Watch for

  • the Sun's apparent drift against the center of the Milky Way as we orbit several degrees around the Sun
  • a comet self-destructing
  • a large mass ejection in the corona.

    The black region around the Sun is the occulting disk of the coronograph; the Sun itself is several times smaller than this.
