Globular star cluster M70

UA 16-inch image of Messier 70

The globular star cluster Messier 70 in Sagittarius, shown in an R-band CCD image obtained with the UA 16-inch telescope. The field of view shown is 15 arcminutes wide. M70 appears on the bottom of the Teapot asterism. This image uses logarithmic intensity scaling to bring out both the central blaze of stars in the cluster and the very rich general field of stars toward the galactic bulge. This is a fairly distant cluster, apparent in the small angular size and paucity of stars compared to some of the more impressive Sagittarius globulars.
