Emission nebula M43


UA 16-inch image of Messier 43

The bright emission nebula Messier 43 in Orion, the northern section of the Great Nebula M42 surrounding NU Orionis, is shown in a blue-light CCD image obtained with the UA 16-inch telescope. The field of view shown encompasses the full 20x30 arcminutes that the SBIG camera delivers on our telescope. M43 itself is at the top of this image, with the very bright center of the nebula - M42 - seen below it. They are perhaps better seen on this view (encompassing M42 as well) from the 130-mm guide scope of the University of Alabama observatory, using a digital SLR:
