Interacting Galaxy Pair CPG 369

This R-band image shows the galaxy pair CPG 369 from Karachentsev's catalog of galaxy pairs. The image was obtained with the 1.1-m Hall telescope of Lowell Observatory. This pair of 15th-magnitude galaxies, also catalogued as Arp 238 and VV 250, lies in northern Ursa Major, about 450 million light-years away. The pair shows extensive tidal effects, including disk distortions, bridges, and tails. The image is displayed using a logarithmic intensity transformation, spanning an area about 3.8 by 3.7 arcminutes; this scale highlights some of the distortions produced near the edge of the field with a focal; reducer (ouch!). North is up and east to the left.
