This R-band image shows the galaxy pair CPG 293, from Karachentsev's catalog of galaxy pairs. The image was obtained with the 1.1-m Hall telescope of Lowell Observatory. This pair of 15th-magnitude galaxies, also catalogued as Holmberg 268, lies in southern Ura Major, at a distance of about 400 million light-years. The northern galaxy shows an interestingly warped disk, which I spent some time trying to map kinematically using a fiber-optic spectrograph at the 6-meter BTA (see the acquisition image and raw spectrum shown there). The image is displayed using a logarithmic intensity transformation, spanning an area about 3.8 by 3.7 arcminutes. North is up and east to the left.
